Decision-making tool for optimizing the management of herds and forage resources.

Forage Adaptation Selection Tool (FAST)

This "expert system" makes it possible to choose, from a wide range of technical options, the forage species to be planted and the optimal management modes of the forage systems, depending on the environment of the farm (climate and soil) and the farmers' strategies (type of animals, type of production, level of inputs, etc.).

The system is designed to help a non-expert user to find the solution best adapted to his/her question. The system includes knowledge base (intangible knowledge of an expert and information deduced by the system), the inference engine (the software reasoning and elaborating the solution) and the interface (dialogue program within the system).

The tool was developed during the ARChE_Net project and is part of the continuity and updating of the "Tropical Forages" software ( developed by our Australian partners, CSIRO. In fact, the database associated with the expert system includes information on a large number of tropical and temperate forage species. This information was obtained from CSIRO and supplemented by observations made on Reunion Island and Madagascar.

The tool is made available via the extranet of the ARChE_Net website.
