ARChE_Net network

The ARChE_Net network brings together more than thirty partners from seven countries of the Indian Ocean: South Africa, Australia, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, France (Réunion) and the Union of the Comoros.

South Africa

CSIR, Advise for scientific and industrial research, is an international African research and development organization, born by a Parliament law in 1945. CSIR undertakes multidisciplinary research and technological innovations that contribute to improve South Africans quality of life. It supports local and national programmes, including climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, invasive species, water resources, air pollution and erosion.

NWU, North-West University is a university located in Baudeng and in the Northwest. It offers to its students a wide choice of university and post-university studies.

UFH, University of Fort Hare, is an university located in the Eastern Cape province of Alice, 50 km east of King William’s Town. The Livestock and pasture science department is an university research unit focused on improving the profit and sustainability of livestock and ecosystems through better use of plants, animals and natural resources.

UKZN, University of Kwazulu Natal, is a university created in 2004 from the merger of of Natal university and Durban-West-city university. It has 5 campuses in this province. The College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science is located on the Pietermarizburg campus.UP, University of Pretoria, was established in 1908 and obtained its university status in 1930.

Australia

CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, is the national science agency in Australia and one of the most diverse and important research agencies in the world. She works on agriculture and alimentation with sustainable crops and livestock on production, as well as on climate change due to GHG emissions and adaptation to climate change.

CSU, Charles Sturt University is a multi-campus university located in New South Wales, Victoria, Australia’s Capital Territory and Ontario (Canada). Agricultural science has been taught on the Wagga Wagga campus for over a hundred years.

The Center of Rhizobium Studies is undertaking research and training on pulse nitrogen fixation. The Study Centre is particularly interested in improving pulse production and solving problems preventing the use of pulses in agriculture.

India

BAIF, Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation, is an Indian NGO pioneer in research and development. It focuses on a sustainable and integrated approach to rural families through agricultural development, animal production, water resources, various health and rural activities as tools for job creation for landless families as well as for the rehabilitation of tribal communities living on degraded lands.

ICRISAT, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics, is an institute for crop research in semi-arid tropical areas. It undertakes scientific research to combat hunger, poverty and environmental degradation in these areas through more efficient agriculture. It focuses in particular on an inclusive, partnership approach aimed at farmers. He also focuses his research on a dynamic of profitability of agricultural activity.

NIANP, National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, is a research institute based in Bangalore. It studies the management of animal food resources using physiological and nutritional approaches to improve animal productivity and thus the profitability of livestock farmers.

Sri PVNR, Fr. V. Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary Institute, is a university based in Hyderabad, Telegana. It offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate courses in breeding and veterinary medicine. Its main objectives are knowledge transfer, promotion of research and technology transfer to farmers.

Madagascar

ESSA, Livestock Department of the Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Agronomiques at the University of Antananarivo, is located in Antananarivo, capital of the country. Opened in 1936, it offers courses in 5 years in agriculture, agro-management, environmental resources, livestock and agro-industry.

FIFAMANOR, Fiompiana Fambolena Malagasy Norveziana, is a research centre for rural development, agriculture and livestock based in Antsirabe. It contributes to the dissemination of agro-ecological techniques in the Vakinankaratra region through a large network of extension agents. He is also involved in the development of cropping methods that help to regenerate soil fertility and in slash-and-burn agriculture in uplands. FIFAMANOR is the only Malagasy institute working on wheat, with a seed production unit.

FOFIFA, Foibem-pirenena ho an'ny Fikarohana ampiharina ho fampandrosoana ny eny Ambanivohitra, is a centre for applied research in rural development. Established in 1947, it comprises various research departments including Zootechnical and Veterinary Research (DRZV).

GRET is an international NGO in development and French law founded in 1976. It aims to combat poverty and inequality by providing sustainable and innovative responses for development in solidarity.

GSDM, Groupement Semis Direct Madagascar, is an organisation bringing together different institutes involved in research, training and dissemination of conservation agriculture or direct sowing. GSDM works at national level in all Malagasy agro-ecological regions.

IRD, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, is a French research institute focusing on interdisciplinary research. For more than 65 years, he has been studying the relationship between people and their environment in Africa, the Mediterranean and Latin America in Asia and the tropical French overseas territories.

LRI, the Radioisotope Laboratory, is part of the University of Antananarivo and has two research units: one on soil and climate change, and the other on nutrient bioavailability.

MDB, Malagasy Dairy Board, was created in 2004 by the Ministry of Livestock (MAEP) with the support of the FAO in order to have a single interlocutor in the dairy sector and thus to better coordinate the activities of this sector. The aim of the MDB is to promote and coordinate the development of the milk sector in Madagascar by: participating in the definition and coordination of the national dairy policy in Madagascar; promote the implementation of the policy and, finally, defend the interests of its members.

Mozambique

CUC-UEM, Centro Universitário de Changalane, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane is based in Maputo, the capital of the country. Founded in 1962, the university has long been the only university in Mozambique. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and doctoral courses. The various departments have one department in Agriculture and Forestry and another in Veterinary Sciences. CUC-UEM was established in 2001 to establish a centre of excellence for the transfer of agricultural technology and courses in animal production.

France (Reunion)

Cirad, Centre for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development, is a public industrial and commercial establishment (EPIC). It works with developing countries to generate and transmit new knowledge, support agricultural development and fuel debate on major global issues related to agriculture. The activities of the Cirad concern life sciences, social sciences and engineering applied to agriculture, food and rural areas.

ARP, Association Réunionnaise de Pastoralisme, is responsible for the land-use planning program, the management of grazing areas and the development of forage production in the Highlands of Reunion Island. For its members, the association implements land improvements such as deforestation or earthworks. It also offers advice on sustainable grazing management (fertilisation, harvesting and rotational grazing) and machinery (fodder production).

FFRCA, Fédération Régionale des Coopératives Agricoles de la Réunion, is a union of the various agricultural cooperatives on Reunion Island. It represents a total of 61 organizations, also federating cooperatives for agricultural equipment that are distributed throughout the island.

SICALAIT, Société d'Intérêt Collectif Agricole Lait, is an island dairy cooperative that was created in 1962. It collects milk from 120 dairy farms and sells it to three dairy processors. It also provides agro-services to its members on various topics: food management, development projects, manure management, heifers unit…

SICA REVIA, Société d'Intérêt Collectif Agricole Réunion Viande, is an island meat cooperative created in 1979. It brings together 320 beef farmers in Reunion Island. Some 20 people specializing in cattle production support cattle producers through their advice and services.

UR-CEMOI, University of the Meeting Centre for Economics and Management of the Indian Ocean, is a research center bringing together researchers in economics and management of the University of Reunion. This research unit, created in 2010, aims to carry out university research and applied research for and with local national and international partners on issues related to Reunion Island and the Indian Ocean.

The Union of the Comoros

The NGO Dahari was created from the ECDD project underway from 2008 to 2013. They are based on the island of Anjouan and their mission is to support local communities "in their agricultural development and in the sustainable management of their natural resources for the benefit of man and biodiversity". Its three main areas of action are rural development, natural resource management and biodiversity conservation.

DNESPV, the National Directorate of Breeding and Veterinary Public Health, is a public institute whose mission is to monitor and control animal epizootic diseases and diseases within the territory of the Union of the Comoros. The institute is composed of 3 departments: Veterinary Public Health, Animal Genetics and Animal Production.
